Delusional Giants Fans Think They Can Poach Bill Belichick

  • The New York Giants are in desperate need of a quality head coach to resurrect the franchise.
  • Bill Belichick is the best in the business, and he used to coach with the Giants. So, why not him?
  • If the rumored issued with Tom Brady is legit and Robert Kraft sides with Brady, maybe the idea isn’t as crazy as it sounds.

Football fans, by their very nature, are delusional. They always think their team is the best, even when they are the worst. Everyone wants to play for them, the best coaches want to coach them, and the refs are out to get them.

So, when a New York Post writer suggested the Giants could poach Bill Belichick away from the Patriots, fans latched onto the idea. Rational thought and common sense should have told them differently, but many seemed to react as if it could happen.

Could it? Could the ‘evil genius’ leave the Patriots? If New England’s reign at the top is over, why not?

This Isn’t The First Bill Belichick-Giants Rumor

Since he has been in New England for as long as most fans can remember, it may come as a surprise to learn that he spent the 80’s with the Giants in various capacities. Next to his tenure with the Patriots, he spent more time with the Giants than anywhere else.

Players and coaches have desired a return to where it all began at the end of their careers before. So, why not Belichick?

Two years ago, before Pat Shurmur took the job with the Giants, there were rumors. There was some supposed rift between Belichick and the Patriots organization. Some believed the rift was bad enough that Belichick might leave.

New York Daily News reporter Gary Myers seemed to think it was really going to happen. “A source close to Belichick” told the New York Daily News’ Gary Myers (via NESN):

I’m sure Bill knows this is his last chance to be the Giants coach. Bill sees an opening — an opening to get to the Giants.

He wants to be the Giants coach. I know that for a fact. That would be pretty cool. My guess is if he wants out, the Giants already know. He would be great with (Dave) Gettleman. Bill is a football guy. Gettleman is a football guy.

His source went on to say that he didn’t know if the alleged rift was going to be enough to make Belichick leave the Patriots. But the source maintained that Belichick wanted to be with the Giants.

So—Could It Happen?

Of course not.

The column by Paul Schwartz is nothing but conjecture. He is thinking out loud about how cool it might be for the Giants if Belichick could resurrect the beleaguered franchise—and that’s it. There are no facts in his argument, just an assumption that there is trouble in paradise and that Belichick may decide enough is enough.

Oh—and he’ll bring offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels with him and Nick Caserio, the Patriots’ director of player personnel (yeah, right).

There is nothing of substance to the rumors; just a reporter wishing the team he covers had a better outlook for the future. The only truth involving the Giants head coach search and the Patriots staff is that the Giants have requested permission to interview special teams coordinator, Joe Judge.

With Ron Rivera signing in Washington and Matt Rhule talking about staying at Baylor, he may be the best they can do.
