Microsoft Just Gave a Big Tease About Xbox Project Scarlett Price

  • Microsoft confirms that Xbox Project Scarlett will compete with the PS5 on price.
  • Xbox boss Phil Spencer said the console wouldn’t be “out of position” on price.
  • Analysts have suggested that the console will cost $500.

Speaking to The Verge, Xbox boss Phil Spencer said that Xbox Project Scarlett would “not be out of position on power or price.” There have been suggestions that the PS5 will cost $500, meaning that Xbox Project Scarlett will likely cost the same.

Spencer says that he and the Xbox team made this decision because of what happened with the Xbox One. The Xbox boss explains that when the Xbox One was first released, it was $100 more expensive than the PS4. This helped the PS4 to quickly begin selling more units than the Xbox One, and PS4 is now one of the best selling consoles in history.

“We started Project Scarlett with this leadership team in place with a goal of having market success,” reveals Spencer.

Gamers on a budget will be glad to hear that Xbox Project Scarlett may not be out of their price range. Many of those who had hoped to get the Xbox One at an affordable price had to wait around a year for the price to be lowered. Microsoft also revealed that lowering the Xbox One’s price tripled the console’s sales in the United States.

However, it also means that Sony and Microsoft will have to do much more to get sales. The PS5 and Xbox Project Scarlett will have to use great games to get people to spend $500 on the console if they can’t just use a lower price. Xbox Project Scarlett may have Xbox Game Pass, but PS5 may have stronger launch games; so it may be difficult to choose a winner.
